The Borneo Ultra-Trail® Marathon 2018 is an extreme, outdoor ultra trail marathon that will take runners through a combination of natural jungle settings and cultural landscapes via trails, dirt tracks and back-roads in the Kiulu Valley North of Kota Kinabalu. There will be sweeping views over the surrounding ridges and valleys as well as to the majestic Mount Kinabalu to the north-east of the area.
Routes for 2018
The 2018 routes are still being reviewed, but are at this stage similar to the 2017 routes with the start/finish location at Pekan Kiulu. Updates, if any, to the 2018 routes and more detailed route descriptions will be provided to all competitors prior to the race.
For maps and profiles for the tentative routes, please refer to COURSE MAPS & PROFILES.
The 2018 routes have been ITRA rated for 5 points for the 100k, 3 points for the 50k and 2 points for the 30k routes and a mountain rating of 5 for all three courses. The three ITRA rated courses are also qualifying courses for the Ultra-Trail® du Mont Blanc (UTMB) www.utmbmontblanc.com and other courses using the ITRA course certification for qualifying. You will note that the accumulated elevation gains in the ITRA ratings are lower than in the course details provided under the COURSE MAPS & PROFILES. This is due to a filtering process performed by ITRA where they filter out smaller undulations which could be caused by inaccuracies in the measurements. We have kept them in for the course details as we know that many parts of the flatter looking sections have these small ups and downs which are very real and can be felt when you are out on the course.
NOTE The distances and elevation gains/losses provided are measured with a Garmin GPS62S. You may find that you get different data if you are carrying a gps or other device to measure distances and elevations during the race. You will most likely record longer distances. This is due to a combination of inaccuracies in the GPS recording through for instance loss of signal under forest canopies, additional distance travelled around aid stations etc. Wrist-type gps devices may not have as good reception and be as reliable as the larger GPS units.
Cutoff times for BUTM 2018:
Cutoff times are introduced at selected aid stations to facilitate the safe management of competitors during the race. Please refer to COURSE MAPS & PROFILES for the details for each course, including cutoff times. Please note that for intermediate stations, the competitor must leave the station before the cutoff time to remain in the race. The final cutoff times expressed in hours from race start at the finish line are:
12k : 6 hours from race start.
30k: 12 hours from race start.
50k: 17 hours from race start.
100k: 33 hours from race start.
