Synopsis:
Once upon a time, in an enchanted forest, grew a very strange tree where the fruit is forbidden to all the forest occupants. A curious elephant, prompted by its stubbornness and perhaps some discontentment with being just an elephant, started eating the forbidden fruit. She found herself changing from one strange animal to another, eventually turning into a monster! “Oh dear, oh dear, what have I gotten myself into?!” rues Ellie. Will the regretful elephant find a way to become a real elephant again?
Introducing Pak Yusof :
Pak Yusof is a renowned local artist. Born 1954, Yusof Gajah, or his real name Mohd Yusof Ismail, has a deep and abiding love for children’s books and working with children. While a busy artist, he has managed to write and illustrate a number of books for children and have won the National Book Council Award for best picture book and the Noma Concours (ACCU) award for best illustrations. His popular picture book, ‘The Real Elephant’ was first published in Malay and has been translated into Japanese. Its enduring qualities have enabled an English publication in 2010. Some of his books have been translated into German, Korean, Chinese and Arabic. The Noma Concours for Picture Book Illustrations was organised by Asia/Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO (ACCU) supported by Noma International Book Development Fund to discover up-and-coming illustrators, graphic designers and artists in Asia (except Japan), the Pacific, Africa, Arab States, and Latin America & the Caribbean, to provide an opportunity at which they could present their works to offer incentives for their creative activities. Review - The Real Elephant
The Real Elephant is a simple story that has a deeper meaning. The illustrations are rich and imaginative as the elephant morphs into different creatures. One feels its triumphs and devastation as it changed into something no longer recognisable... even to itself. --Peter Worthington, Author
Review - Elephabet
Praise for Elephabet!
"When I saw [Yusof's] books, my first thought was that I must send them to my grand-daughters - they will treasure them."
Datin Paduka Chen Mun Kuen, ROYAL SELANGOR
"Yusof's Elephabet presents interpretive works inspired by his imagination. He opts for techniques and process unique to himself and he has translated and unveiled the elephants and alphabet into colorful and intimate portraits of abstract visuals."
Assoc. Prof. Salmah Abu Mansor, Senior Fellow Institute of the Malay World and Civilization (ATMA), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia
"Yusof Gajah is all about love. Besides his love for elephants, his love for people is seen in his ability to delight us all, whether we're serious art collectors or children. His willingness to share his skills and passion makes him loved by many artists young and old. And one hopes that his love for nature can inspire our country's leaders to save our rainforests!"
Pang Khee Teik, Arts Programme Director, The Annexe Gallery
Elephabet, a portmanteau of the words “elephant” and “alphabet”, is an elementary revision of the alphabet for grown-ups and children. …Yusof wants his readers to return to the basics of life. His philosophy of life is summed up in the book, which features elephants perched and morphed to form the 26 letters of the Latin alphabet. The enchanting paintings also reveal hidden symbols upon closer observation…
Grace Chin, The Edge
"[Yusof] has invented the alphabet in a new style, the elephant style, creating the Elephabet, an ABC as seen by him.... Colours and shapes go hand in hand, forming a new world, tickling the curiosity. It will be a great book for children to see and learn. At the same time, adults can enjoy all the good advice that flows freely from the pages. We all need people like Yusof Gajah, to brighten our life, to stimulate our imagination and be filled with pleasure.”
Arild Braastad, Ambassador of Norway
"Elephabet is a random journey gleaned from personal experiences, events and the environment. It is a whimsical pictogram filled with rainbow hues, childplay and cartoon-like characters – elements of a psychological experience that is quintessentially Yusof ‘Gajah’."
Ooi Kok Chuen, Art Writer
"Yusof Gajah is a brilliant synthesizer. Elephabet is a lovely chorus of colors and textures. For him, art is not optional; it is necessary."
