2023 Penang Rowing International Indoor Championships
Penang Rowing Association (PRA) with Concept2 Malaysia as the presenting partner, is once again proud to bring you the second Penang Rowing International Indoor Championships (PRICH) this year on 19th August 2023 (Saturday) at new venue Straits Quay Retail Marina, Tanjung Tokong, Penang. 2023 PRICH is supported by the Penang State Sports Council (Majlis Sukan Negeri Pulau Pinang, MSNPP), Penang State Government Youth and Sports Committee, and the Malaysia Rowing Association (PERDAMA).
Our vision is to promote “Rowing for Everyone.", This championship is open to everyone without any qualification or affiliation requirement. We welcome individuals, clubs, schools, varsities, rowing associations, corporate companies, government departments and uniform
bodies to participate in this spectacular event.

No limitation. Every person is allowed to join as many categories as they can. Please check your fitness and body condition before you embark on entering too many events and end up not being able to complete the race and putting yourself up for injury. As this is a 1-day race, the schedule will be very packed, and if you fail to turn up on time for the race, the race will go on, and there is no refund for failing to start the race.

Age is determined as of the date of birth and age at the event date 19th August 2023. For example, in the 23 and Under event, the maximum age is 23 years, 11 months, and 30 days. Athletes must be born on or after 13th August 1999. Check your age using this web calculator:

Categories and Entry Fee:
**Inter Corporate Category: Open and limited to NGO, business corporation, companies, government agencies, government offices, and uniform bodies (Police, BOMBA, Armed Forces, Army, Navy, Air Force, etc.) only.
Winner Prizes:
Winner Medals (Gold, Silver, and Bronze) will be awarded to the first three fastest athletes/teams in every category
Special Award:
For teams who win the most number of gold medals. If the number of gold medals is identical, the team with the most number of silver medals win. If the number of silver medals is identical, the team with the most number of bronze medals win.
The Best Varsity Team Award (For Colleges, University Colleges, and Universities)
Overall Champion: One trophy plus Cash Prize of RM 1000.

* All participants who finish the race successfully will be awarded with e-certificate by email after the race.
**Every participant will get one (1) event t-shirt only regardless of how many categories entered.
**For example, athlete entering one (1) category, he/she will get one (1) shirt. If enter two (2) categories, he/she will also receive one (1) shirt only, same for entering three (3) categories, he/she will also receive one (1) shirt only.

What sort of indoor rowing machines are used?
Concept2 RowERG Standard Leg is the Official rowing machine for the championship.
Qualification
Do I need to qualify to enter?
No, you do not need to qualify, no requirement at all – everyone is welcome!
Do I need to be a member of a club or gym or association to compete?
There is no need to be a part of a club or gym or association to compete. However, we encourage you to register your team, club, association in the registration where your winning medals will contribute towards the team ranking award.
Foreigners / International participants
I live overseas. Can I enter?
Definitely! If you can enter Malaysia with a valid VISA, you can arrange your own trip and travel to Penang, Malaysia to join the championships. You must apply your own visa approval.
Food/drinks/meals
Can I bring food and drink into the facility with me?
The Straits Quay Retail Marina policy does not allow outside food and drink into the mall.
Does the event organizer prepare food for participants?
The ticket fee only includes participation in the race, food/drinks are not included. There are plenty of restaurants, convenient shops, in the Straits Quay Retail Marina for you to enjoy your breakfast, coffee, lunch, dinner and supper.
Registration
How many events can I join?

Can I do a bulk entry?
Yes, you can, in the ticketing link, you can register as a buyer only, and buy multiple tickets. Just enter the required details for each participant.
Can I get a refund if I can’t race?
There are no refunds as indicated in the terms and conditions below.
If my club (or association or school) wants to send more than 1 entry for each categories, is it possible?
Yes, you can send unlimited number of entries per organization. Take note for Double and Team Relay event registration, after you enter the organization name (for example, Super Sports Club), you need to name each team uniquely, for example, SSC A, SSC B, SSC C, etc. The team’s name cannot be the same in the entire championship across all categories. For example, if you have a team name SSC A in the 2000m Double Men, you cannot name another team SSC A in the 2000m Double Women or any other events, there is only one SSC A team in the entire championship.
Race
Can I bring someone onto the race floor with me?
Only the single and double categories allow to bring ONE (1) person to accompany him/her into the race floor. Coaches is NOT allowed to accompany the athletes for Team Relay categories. The person can only give verbal instruction, with no physical assistance like helping the athlete or touching the machine will result in disqualification.
Can I use someone else’s entry?
No, entries are non-transferable, and no substitution is allowed. Athletes IC or Passport will be checked on registration.
Why do I need to submit a 2000m & 500m time?
This is optional. To make the event more exciting for spectators, we try to group similarly paced athletes together in their heats. This is NOT a qualifying time, just for grouping purposes. Those who does not submit their times will be allocated accordingly. The race draw by the organiser is final. Each participant will only race one time, and the fastest time from all the heats of the same age group will be the winner.
Is there a warm-up area?
The rowing machine warm-up area is adjacent to the race floor.
What is the damper/drag factor can I use?
You may use any drag factor setting as you preferred. You must set the damper before race start. You cannot change the damper once the race has begun. This is the Charley Butt Rule.
Categories
What is an Open category?
Open categories mean no age limit and no weight limit for the same gender. For example, Open 2000m Men, if the participant does not fit-in other age groups or lightweight events, or he/she who wish to challenge himself/herself, can enter this category instead of age group.
What is the difference between 60+ and 60+ Lightweight age category?
The 60+ have no weight limit (openweight), while the 60+ Lightweight, the athlete must weight under 75.00kg (for male) and under 61.50kg (for female). Lightweight athlete must attend the weigh-in period (2hr - 1 hr before race) to qualify for Lightweight event. Participants will not be allowed to race in Lightweight event if they failed the weigh-in session. The participant still can allow to compete, but the result will be counted in openweight category.
What is the Lightweight limitation?
The maximum weight limit for lightweight men is 75.00 kg and women is 61.50 kg.
When is the weigh-in period?
Lightweight categories athletes must weigh-in not more than 2 hours before the scheduled start time of their race. Participants should wear the racing uniform, excluding shoes, for weigh-in. If the weigh-in is above the limits, or failure to weigh-in within time period, participant is not eligible for lightweight event, you still can compete, but the result will be counted in openweight event. If the athlete enter multiple categories, just need to weigh one (1) time only before the first (1st) race. Please inform the marshal that you are entering multiple categories, so that they can record for other categories as well.
What is my age group?

How is the Open 2000m Double event run?
Open = no age limit and no weight limit. 2 participants sitting on 2 machines and row 2000m each at the same time. The race software will combine the result from both machines and show one (1) average speed to complete the 2000m distance. Imagine you and your partner are
rowing on the same boat. It is not a relay, there is no changeover. For lightweight, each individual must weigh less than 75.00 kg (for men) and 61.50 kg (for women)
How is the Open 2000m Double Mixed and Open 2000m Relay Mixed event run?
The Double team must consist of 1 men and 1 women, for Relay must consist of 2 men and 2 women. For Open 2000m Double Mixed event, Relay Mixed (also apply to Double 2000m Men & Double 2000m Women), there is no age limit and no weight limit. For Open Lightweight
2000m Double Mixed event, there is no age limit, but have weight limit, both must weigh less than 75.00 kg (for men) and 61.50 kg (for women). Mixed event, half of the crew shall be men, another half shall be women.
For 4x500m Team Relay, is there any weight limit?
There is no weight limit for all 4x500m Team Relay events. Only age and gender categories.
For 4x500m Team Relay, how is the age group Open, 30+, 40+ works?
Open = no age limit, no weigh limit
30+ = minimum age 30 years old and above.
40+ = minimum age 40 years old and above.
Example, if you have 2 members age 35 and 2 members age 45, your team can join the 30+ event, as the minimum age 30 years old and above. You cannot join the 40+ categories as there are 2 members who are under 40 years old.
For 4x500m Team Relay, can I row more than 500m or less than 500m?
Each team using one machine in the relay race, each member of a team shall row 500m distance, when it has reached the 500m point, changeover of rowers must take place within 2 strokes. Failure to comply will result in 10 seconds penalty added to the result. The result of
each team includes the changeover between members.
For 4x500m Team Relay, can my team members hold the foot strap?
Yes, only the racing team members can hold the foot strap while another member is rowing. In the case of a rowing member fall off from their seat, no team members shall assist in pulling the handle to row, any team fail to comply will result in 10 seconds penalty added to the result.
For Para Rowing, what is the classification?
The Para Rowing category is open to all people, no age limit, no weight limit, with disabilities such as visual impairment, physically disabled, etc. This is the first time we include the Para category, so this single category includes all PR1, PR2 and PR3 categories stated by FISA.
When will the full result be released?
We aim to have full results published within 48 hours of the completion of championships.
