“Media artist Lee is a magician who breathes new life into masterpieces with digital technology. Paintings become animated in his hands as Lee creates further depth in them” – Korea Times
Watch water-ink paintings come to life as internationally-acclaimed South Korean artist Lee Lee-Nam reimagines traditional art and juxtaposes it with digital imagery, creating vivid images that have been likened to dreams overlapping with reality. Rather than parodying or criticising classical art, these subtle alterations introduce new meaning and movement to the pieces, creating a new or different story.
Some of Lee’s notable works include his interpretation of Jan Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring and Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. Lee also reworks classical Korean art, engaging the audience with the sounds of nature, subtle atmospheric transitions and otherwise inanimate characters that travel within the paintings. His work has garnered a string of accolades, including Young Artist of the Year (2005) from Gwangju Museum of Art, and can be found in New York, Beijing and Germany. Lee has also held over 200 exhibitions worldwide and will be displaying his work in South East Asia for the first time.
