Gerakbudaya is pleased to host Dr Syed Farid Alatas at Rumah Gerakbudaya for an important talk on a topic of vital importance to contemporary Malaysia. Entitled “Muslim Extremism in Malaysia: Definitions and Manifestations”, Dr Alatas’ talk will be concerned with outlining the various causes, definitions and manifestations of extremism in Malaysia and discussing what this means for the country moving forward.

As he has argued, extremism among Muslims today has several causes, from extra-religious factors such as geo-politics, economic underdevelopment or authoritarianism to specific religious ideologies and schools of thought, yet how do these factors impact upon Malaysia, and how do they shape the forms of extremism prevalent here? Dr Alatas will give a talk addressing these questions after which the floor will be opened up for discussion and debate.

Please do come along and join the conversation.
