Asma Elbadawi was born in Sudan and raised in England. A basketball player and coach, artist, as well as a spoken word poet, she is a Leeds Words First BBC Radio 1Xtra Finalist. Her dual cultural heritage deeply influences her creativity. Her most recent work revolves around the notion of home; how, in essence, she belongs both in the UK and Sudan. Her work also contains elements of feminism and female empowerment, where she attempts to challenge preconceived cultural norms and expectations out of a genuine love for her two main passions: creativity and sport.
Outside of her poetry, she advocates for equality and diversity in basketball and for women of faith to participate in sports. She has been a part of the#FibaAllowHijab campaign towards permanently lifting the ban on headgear which hinders women of particular religious groups from participating and competing professionally.
She has been featured on AJ+ and was recently a speaker at the African Women and Sports conference held in Botswana, where she sat on a panel to discuss minority communities in sports and inclusive sports facilities.
